Space Update: ISRO Successfully Launches EOS-05 Imaging Satellite on GSLV-F17

Writing

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched EOS-05, a next-generation Earth observation and imaging satellite, aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The successful mission marks an important milestone for India’s space programme, particularly in the field of high-altitude Earth imaging and large-area monitoring. Weighing around 2,367 kg, EOS-05 has been designed to provide detailed and frequent observations of a wide region of the Earth. After liftoff, the satellite was placed into its designated transfer orbit, from where it will be moved towards its operational geosynchronous position at an altitude of around 36,000 kilometres. From this high-altitude vantage point, the satellite is expected to support a wide range of applications, including weather observation, agriculture, environmental monitoring, urban development, water-resource management and disaster response. Its ability to repeatedly observe large areas could also strengthen India’s capability to monitor strategically important regions and respond quickly to emerging situations. The mission assumes added significance following recent setbacks in India’s launch programme and comes after a substantial gap between major launches. EOS-05 also represents a renewed push towards geosynchronous Earth-imaging capabilities following the earlier GISAT-1/EOS-03 mission attempt. The successful performance of the GSLV-F17 and deployment of EOS-05 demonstrate ISRO’s continued progress in advanced satellite technology and heavy-lift launch operations. The mission is expected to expand India’s Earth-observation capabilities while providing valuable data for civilian planning, environmental assessment, national preparedness and disaster-management efforts.
