Space-Tech Startups: The Rise of India's Private Space Sector

Until recently, space exploration in India was exclusively the domain of ISRO. However, with historic policy reforms in 2020, the Indian government opened the doors to private enterprise, creating a thriving space-tech startup boom.

1. The Role of IN-SPACe and NSIL

To bridge the gap between private companies and government assets, two key entities were formed:

• IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center): A single-window regulatory agency that authorizes, supervises, and coordinates private space activities and grants access to ISRO labs, test facilities, and launchpads.
• NSIL (NewSpace India Limited): The commercial arm of ISRO, which actively handles commercial satellite launch bookings, transfers technology from ISRO to private industries, and manages private aerospace manufacturing.

Dozens of Indian space startups are building cutting-edge hardware:
