India's Ascent to the Stars: Famous ISRO Space Missions

Over the last five decades, the Indian Space Research Organisation has transformed India into a global space superpower. By combining frugality, indigenous engineering, and sheer grit, ISRO has achieved multiple milestones that have eluded more heavily funded space agencies.

Let's review the active roster of monumental Indian space exploration missions.

1. Aditya-L1: India's Sun Chaser

Launched on September 2, 2023, Aditya-L1 is India's first dedicated space observatory to study our closest star, the Sun.

  • Orbit: Positioned in a halo orbit around the Lagrangian Point 1 (L1), situated roughly 1.5 million kilometers from Earth.
  • Goal: Studying solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), solar winds, and space weather behaviors. By sitting at L1, Aditya-L1 enjoys an uninterrupted view of the Sun without any occultations or eclipses.

2. Chandrayaan-3: Reclaiming the Moon

Following the partial setbacks of Chandrayaan-2's lander, Chandrayaan-3 completed a historic, textbook landing near the Moon's rugged South Pole on August 23, 2023.

  • Lander (Vikram): Safely soft-landed using customized throttleable thrusters and hazard avoidance cameras.
  • Rover (Pragyan): Disembarked and analyzed chemical elements on the lunar surface, confirming the presence of sulfur, aluminum, calcium, iron, chromium, and oxygen.

3. Mangalyaan (MOM): India's Martian Odyssey

Launched in November 2013, the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) entered orbit around Mars on its very first try on September 24, 2014.

  • Frugality: Achieved at a cost of just $74 million (cheaper than several Hollywood science fiction movies!).
  • Legacy: Operated successfully for 8 years (8 times its planned lifespan), sending high-resolution imagery and atmospheric analysis of Martian methane.
